Huntersville Camp 2011
The Brawley Home
During the camp you can check here for updates on what's going on at the Brawley home.
Monday July 18, 2011
The adults on the Brawley team are Frank Green (Site Leader), Nancy Getsinger, Kyle Shores, Kristin Lassiter and Hope Oliphant. The youth are Kayla Downer, Melanie Beck, Caroline Davis, Meredith Allen, Taylor Jones, Taylor Coles, Tyler Downer, TJ Bell and Jacob Wright.
The Brawley home has two major projects, the roof which needs to be reshingled and the den. The den is a converted carport. The windows are inadequate and the floor has a bad slope to it.
By mid-morning the team had cleared the street-side of the roof of all shingles. An inspection revealed that the there were some bad spots in the sheathing but for the most part it was in good shape.
Other team members worked on demo-ing the team room.
The biggest challenge was to figure out how the den needed to be reframed or if the existing framing could be salvaged in anyway.

Taking a Step Back to Move Two Steps Forward
Frank Greene was a little frustrated today. He's been trying to figure out how to best shore up the framing of the carport-turned-den without throwing out too much of what's there. His Monday plan didn't work out so he ripped that out and started again. One of the Salkehatchie rules is that it's usually easier to rip it out completely rather than work with what's already there.
The roof moved along at a good pace although it was getting hot in the afternoon.
I'm really hoping this team stays healthy. Caroline needed to get inside since she was overheating. We all monitored her through the afternoon and evening and she seems fine. Kristin has had a sore throat which she feels might turn into something worse and Elizabeth spent a long day on the roof. Hopefully everyone will keep it together for the remainder of the week.
Side note .... The Brawley team has been the last to arrive for dinner on Monday and Tuesday.

A couple of good things happended today. First the roof work was complete meaning that no one needed to be on that hot roof again. Secondly, Robert Dobbins showed up and he was able to take on the project of leveling the floor in the den. After several tries Frank was able to find the best approach to securing the walls of the den. They are solid.
Over the next couple of days there will be a challenge having so many people working in a confined space in the den.
In addition, the team completed some painting in bathroom and living room.
They should complete their projects by the end of the week.

Frank ended the day rather stressed. As the day wore one and the outdoor projects were completed attention turned to the den. With a floor to be framed and drywall to be hung there wasn't a lot of room to move around.
Outside of the den, the kitchen and bathroom were complete. The kitchen floor is now a laminate and it looks great. The bathroom has been repainted.
The team worked until just after 8:00am and plans an early start on Friday morning. They are the only team that's worried about not completing their projects. However, there's been a lot great work completed here. It's sometimes easy to forget what has been done and just focus on what's yet to be completed. Regardless of the outcome this team has accomplished a lot this week.
